RUN! Do not walk!
zimshan has written the most thorough and brilliant meta on S8 Sam and Dean. It's mostly about Sam but anything about Sam has to include Dean. Snippet because...THIS!:
For much of fandom, one of those questions is, 'What happened to Sam to make him not look for Dean?'
Here is where I'm going to go out on a limb and say, I don't need an answer for this. There might very well be one. Maybe he was under the influence of the angels or Crowley who had an interest in keeping Dean down in purg all year long. Maybe he really DID do something and he's playing it cool and hiding it from Dean. I look forward to the unraveling of Sam's flashback stories as the season progresses. But I don't feel like I need some big REASON. A "human story", as Carver has called it, will work just fine. Because a "human story" for this just makes so much sense.
I have been holding off my thoughts on what might be going on with Sam this season because we just haven't been given enough information yet. I have desperately wanted something to be up - something major to have influenced Sam's decision, but after reading this the something is no longer a "must have" for me. Mainly because it's already in plain sight.
I love it. I would love to think Show has been this thoughtful about the boys character arcs this season. After the first two episodes I have a feeling they just might have. (YAY!)
While I am here I've been meaning to rec a wonderful story written by
cherie_morte - Minotaurs Inside a Maze. It was posted before 8.01 aired but I didn't read it until after I saw that episode. What I love about it is how much it has STUCK WITH ME ever since I read it. It is such a refreshing, interesting and clever idea and it works on so many levels. It is also possibly responsible for my skewed look at the nature of monsters and purgatory now (which is good!). Go read!
And if you like looking at all the little details in an episode (like me!) check out
galwithglasses 8.02 picspam. I had no idea there was so much (well placed) red in that ep!
I'm really looking forward to the next ep. Jensen directing excites me and I am reeaally keen to see how they are going to be moving everything forward. I'm thinking this one has to be a good indicator.

Date: 2012-10-17 10:59 pm (UTC)I remember that this was the first episode filmed and Jensen did it. I was thinking yesterday that Jared and Jensen at least knew where their characters were at by episode three. I am hoping it explains a little more about their characterisations in episodes 1 & 2. :)

Date: 2012-10-17 11:05 pm (UTC)omg, my brain isn't nearly as big as yours. I am sure I wouldn't have been any help other than HAND HOLDING! I could have done that for sure! :))
Like I loveeed last year's setup. The execution however was a complete failboat.
I think that's why I get so nervous for my little show. They can get it so right and then so very wrong. I think if they are at least thinking along the lines that you are then they are on some sort of track. They would probably need to spell it out for the audience because I know many wouldn't accept Sam not hunting because he was scared to make a choice (and for ALLL those other reasons you mentioned).
I have a feeling I might just be going back to read it whenever show gets me down.
And cherie's fic is soooooo interesting. A lovely twist on what a reader might expect but with lovely characterisations that make it all so believable.

Date: 2012-10-18 07:52 am (UTC)To me, Dean's insistence that he and Sam hunt forever is kind of selfish. We know they are co-dependent on each other, but Dean moreso than Sam. And I think that has always bothered Dean -- Sam was able to separate himself from Dean and John and not go crazy about it. We know Dean would never do that because his life -- and existence sometimes it feel like -- is focused solely on Sam.
I think Dean knows that he would be lost without Sam, but Sam wouldn't be lost without him. And I'm sure that's why he's really bothered by Sam's desire to settle down. His brother doesn't need him as much as he thinks. It must be a blow to Dean, considering what he gave up for Sam.
I love them both, but seeing Sam finally get what he's wanted all these years would be ideal, even if Dean feels hurt by it.

Date: 2012-10-18 01:31 pm (UTC)Oh yes. It's such a good point. Dean has as many issues as Sam does about this hunting life.

You know, I agree. Of course it won't happen because they both have to hunt but I am finally feeling like I totally understand Sam's need for a normal life. And I'd love him to have it. Both of them.
